Why Water Play?

Now that the weather is starting to warm up and summer is quickly approaching. Beat the heat and cool down by using water during play. There are so many benefits to water activities and games. Not only will it peak the interest of toddlers to teens, playing with water is a great way to promote sensory motor development. When children explore and play with water in all of its physical forms, there are so many opportunities to develop various motor skills!

When kids play in a pool, they are working hard to move their body through the resistance of the water. This heavy-work activity provides wonderful proprioceptive input to all parts of their body, which can be very regulating and calming. Don’t have access to a pool? That’s no problem at all! Children can still get similar benefits from squeezing wet sponges, filling and tossing water balloons, transferring water during a relay race, and spraying water at targets with a spray bottle. Below are some refreshing water play activities that can be enjoyed by children of all ages.
